Balgarianovinite.com Mystification, philosophical influences, playfulness and eroticism in Pencho Slaveykov’s works were among the themes discussed at a BTA forum in Burgas marking the 160th anniversary of the poet’s birth.
The discussion, part of BTA’s nationwide “Pencho Slaveykov Today” initiative, was moderated by literary scholar and critic Yordan Eftimov and featured literary critic Mitko Novkov, writer Ivan Sukhivanov, Burgas Deputy Mayor for Culture and Religious Affairs Diana Savateva, and Velika Gyulemerova of Prof. Dr Assen Zlatarov Burgas State University.
Eftimov examined Slaveykov’s place in Bulgarian modernism and his philosophical influences, particularly Friedrich Nietzsche, while arguing that such influences should not be understood as a direct reflection of philosophical ideas. He concluded that the discussion had highlighted themes such as eroticism, playfulness, mystification and the continuing relevance of Slaveykov’s work.
Novkov focused on philosopher Dimitar Mihalchev’s contribution to the development of Bulgarian modernism and suggested that, with Slaveykov’s support, Mihalchev helped steer Bulgarian intellectual thought toward a more rational form of modernism. He also discussed the role of mystification in Slaveykov’s writing and considered how the poet’s legacy might have differed had he received the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Sukhivanov centered his remarks on The Island of the Blessed, describing the fictional poets in the book as archetypes of different types of Bulgarian writers. Savateva highlighted Slaveykov’s connections with Burgas and the city’s cultural life, while Gyulemerova discussed how his works continue to resonate with contemporary readers, including through themes such as eroticism.
The discussion was the 25th event in BTA’s nationwide campaign dedicated to Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian modernism. The initiative is being held in all 33 of the agency’s national press clubs, while the December issue of BTA’s LIK magazine will be dedicated to the poet.
