Bulgaria’s gross external debt amounted to EUR 69,814.3 million (56.1% of GDP) at the end of July 2026, growing by EUR 14,572 million (26.4%) from the end of July 2025 when it amounted to EUR 55,242.3 million, 47.6% of GDP, Bulgarian National Bank preliminary data published on Wednesday show.
At the end of July 2026, short-term liabilities equalled EUR 19,362.6 million (27.7% of the total debt, 15.5% of GDP), increasing by EUR 10,100.3 million (109%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 9,262.4 million, 16.8% of the total debt, 8% of GDP). Long-term liabilities totalled EUR 50,451.7 million (72.3% of the total debt, 40.5% of GDP) at the end of July 2026, growing by EUR 4,471.8 million (9.7%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 45,979.9 million, 83.2% of the total debt, 39.6% of GDP).
Gross external liabilities with a remaining maturity of over one year totalled EUR 40,317.2 million (57.7%) at the end of July 2026. 72.6% of gross external liabilities were denominated in euro, compared with 80% at the end of July 2025
General government’s gross external debt totalled EUR 18,846 million (15.1% of GDP) at the end of July 2026, growing by EUR 1,050.8 million (5.9%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 17,795.2 million, 15.3% of GDP). It held the largest share of external debt, accounting for 27% at the end of July 2026, compared with 32.2% at the end of July 2025.
The external liabilities of the central bank stood at EUR 10,604.2 million (8.5% of GDP), growing by EUR 8,715 million from the end of July 2025 (EUR 1,889.2 million, 1.6% of GDP). The increase reflects liabilities related to the allocation of euro banknotes within the Eurosystem following the country’s accession to the euro area on January 1, 2026.
The external liabilities of other MFIs (banks and money market funds) totalled EUR 11,397.9 million (9.2% of GDP), growing by EUR 3,686.3 million (47.8%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 7,711.6 million, 6.6% of GDP).
Other sectors’ external debt equalled EUR 14,840.7 million (11.9% of GDP), increasing by EUR 586.6 million (4.1%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 14,254.1 million, 12.3% of GDP). The stock of intercompany lending amounted to EUR 14,125.5 million (11.3% of GDP) at the end of July 2026, up by EUR 533.3 million (3.9%) from the end of July 2025 (EUR 13,592.2 million, 11.7% of GDP).
