Bulgaria has a long history in space research, science and technology and deserves a place in today’s joint efforts to develop European space capabilities, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said on Wednesday at the Euronews Summit on Defence and Space in Brussels, the government said in a press release.
Radev highlighted Bulgaria’s strong traditions in the field and its recent achievements, pointing to Bulgarian company EnduroSat as a prominent example. In recent years, the company has manufactured and launched more small satellites into space than all other European companies combined, he said. Earlier in September, EnduroSat and Arianespace signed a memorandum of understanding at the Elysee Palace in Paris in the presence of Radev and French President Emmanuel Macron.
Space was no longer merely a backdrop to security and defence but was gradually becoming their foundation, the PM said, outlining the current strategic challenges facing Europe in space technology and industry.
He stressed that the issue was not simply about funding, adding that Europe’s future success would depend on how wisely resources were used collectively. To make Europe strong, prosperous and stable, he said, the continent needed to build a robust European space ecosystem, with joint action and faster implementation being essential.
Radev also emphasized the need for greater interoperability between national and European space programmes. He said Europe had to accelerate the transition from the laboratory to orbit and from orbit to operational applications.
The PM voiced confidence that every EU and NATO member state had a role to play in this common effort. He recalled that until just two decades ago, space had been accessible only to countries with enormous financial resources and industrial capacity. Advances in new technologies and artificial intelligence, however, had greatly expanded the available opportunities.
Earlier on Wednesday, in an interview with Euronews in Brussels on the sidelines of a high-level forum, Radev said diplomatic options for resolving the war in Ukraine had not been exhausted.
The summit brings together representatives of politics, defence, industry and the expert community to discuss the future of European security and defence. Its agenda includes key policies, technologies and partnerships, as well as the challenges and opportunities facing Europe’s defence and space sectors.
