Bulgaria and Hungary share a common vision for Europe and for the development of their bilateral relations, Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova said on Monday. She was speaking alongside Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban at the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Lajos Kossuth House Museum in Shumen, Northeastern Bulgaria, held at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry.
Orban is on an official visit to Bulgaria for the Day of Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship, observed on October 19, the feast day of St John of Rila the Miracle Worker. The date was designated by Bulgaria’s National Assembly in 2016.
Petrova said that Bulgaria and Hungary will work together to strengthen economic cooperation and contribute to greater stability and prosperity in Europe. “At a time when Europe is torn by conflicts and faces a complicated security and economic environment, it is very important to work closely with our friends and find opportunities to pursue common policies and shared goals,” she added.
Petrova said the bilateral talks held so far have identified a solid basis for developing relations more actively across a wide range of areas. Culture and history are often the parts of a shared past that connect nations the most, she added.
The exhibition was organized by the Lajos Kossuth House Museum in Shumen and focuses on the arrival of several thousand Hungarian exiles after the suppression of the 1848 revolution. Petrova noted that the house in Shumen sheltered Hungarian national hero Lajos Kossuth during his stay in Bulgaria from 1849 to 1851 and is now a museum symbolizing the longstanding friendship between the two countries.
