Hungary’s strategic partnership with Bulgaria provides a solid foundation for the two countries to continue working together towards freedom, peace and security in Europe and around the world, Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban said in Sofia on Monday. “Friendship between our two countries means that they can rely on each other. At this historic moment, when Hungary and Bulgaria are facing overlapping crises with unprecedented consequences, we are relying even more on our historical and cultural ties,” Orban said, speaking at the opening of an exhibition dedicated to the history of the Lajos Kossuth House Museum in Shumen.
The exhibition at the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry in Sofia marks Bulgaria-Hungary Friendship Day. It was inaugurated by Orban and Bulgarian Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova.
The guest noted that Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day was also being marked in the Hungarian Parliament, with the celebrations led by Hungarian Culture Minister Zoltan Tarr.
The museum in Shumen is named after Lajos Kossuth (1802-1894), a Hungarian politician who played an important role in the Hungarian Revolution of 1848. After the revolution, Kossuth and other Hungarian exiles were welcomed with open arms in Bulgaria’s Vidin and later in Shumen. The exiles and the local Bulgarian community became friends and learned a great deal from one another. The trust they built at the time remains to this day, Orban said.
October 19 is celebrated as Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day. The date, on which the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honours St John of Rila the Miracle Maker, was chosen by a decision of Bulgaria’s National Assembly on September 15, 2016.
