Bulgarian Community in Hungary Helps Strengthen Bilateral Ties, Hungarian Culture Minister Says 2026

The Bulgarian community in Hungary plays an important role in strengthening relations between the two countries and can serve as a means of deepening dialogue and exchanges between them, Hungarian Social Relations and Culture Minister Zoltan Tarr told journalists on Monday during the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Budapest.
Tarr said historical ties and the Christian faith were among the main factors that had brought the Bulgarian and Hungarian peoples closer over the centuries. Today, the European Union provides an additional framework for close cooperation between the two countries, he added.
“When I was a member of the European Parliament [July, 2024 to May, 2026], we maintained particularly close and regular contacts with the Bulgarian delegation because there were so many issues of common interest that mattered to both countries,” Tarr said.
Tarr welcomed initiatives by Hungary’s Bulgarian community that promote Bulgarian history and culture and deepen mutual understanding. “I believe one of the things we should do, particularly given that Hungary has a relatively sizable Bulgarian national minority, is to use its presence as a means of promoting this kind of dialogue and exchange,” he said.
Tarr also pointed to Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area as an example from which Hungary could draw experience. He said Bulgaria’s experience is particularly valuable for Hungary, which is also discussing its future accession to the euro area. He expressed confidence that there is considerable scope for further developing Bulgarian-Hungarian relations in a number of other areas.
BTA is organizing the 21st World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Budapest and Esztergom, Hungary, on October 19 and 20, with the support of DSK Bank, OTP Group, Aurubis Bulgaria, A1, SOF Connect – the operator of Vasil Levski Sofia Airport, Geotechmin, Postbank and the 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund. This year’s meeting is mottoed “Media and Leaders”. The forum is expected to bring together participants from 25 countries, both in person and online.
