Bulgaria needs new people in politics who can contribute to the country’s development, vice-presidential candidate Stefan Popov said at a press conference in Pazardzhik, Southern Bulgaria, on Tuesday.
Popov described himself and presidential candidate Ivo Lulchev, a lawyer, as patriotic Bulgarians. He said he had initially entered politics without major ambitions, but these had subsequently grown.
“I was raised with patriotism and love for brotherly Russia. I am a fifth-generation Russophile,” Popov said.
He argued that Bulgaria had the potential to develop further but that restoring economic and cultural relations with Russia was essential to achieving this.
Popov described war as a means of appropriating funds, saying such practices had existed throughout different periods of history.
He also said he was not opposed to Europe, adding that he loved Europe and considered himself European.
The vice-presidential candidate urged citizens to vote in the upcoming elections, noting that some had become disillusioned following several recent votes. He said he expected support for his presidential ticket.
Popov identified the demographic crisis as Bulgaria’s most serious problem. He called for financial support for young people and families, as well as particular attention to mothers to give them greater confidence in their children’s future.
He also listed Bulgaria’s food self-sufficiency among his main priorities.
