Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov met with European Council President Antonia Costa in Brussels, the Cabinet’s press centre said on Wednesday. The two discussed enhancing security, sanctions against Russia and support for Ukraine, as well as the Multiannual Financial Framework.
The two spoke on the eve of the European Council meeting, which will be held on Thursday.
“In the EU’s unified approach, in coordination with transatlantic partners, lies the key to safeguarding the security of European citizens and stability in the region. The developments in the Middle East raise serious concerns about new migration pressure towards the EU, while at the same time creating a risk of terrorist threats,” Gurov said.
He called for Europe’s focus to remain on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and on a unified approach regarding the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the entry into force of the Ukraine Facility loan. During the talks, it was noted that potential divergence in approaches, including following the escalation in the Middle East and rising energy prices, would seriously undermine the effectiveness of restrictive measures.
Regarding the situation in the Middle East, Gurov stressed that maintaining maritime security and respecting freedom of navigation are of paramount importance. At the same time, Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
