Balgarianovinite.com GERB leader Boyko Borissov, who is in Brussels for the 50th anniversary of the European People’s Party (EPP), discussed several topics in a video broadcast on his Facebook page on Wednesday.
Ahead of the April 19 snap parliamentary elections, Borissov said coalitions are formed after elections. “Each party comes forward with its full strength and commitment. Depending on how people rank us, there are different ways to proceed, including the possibility of holding new elections,” he said.
Talking about the Middle East conflict, Borissov said the world is going through “a terrible multi-front war” and with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, fuel prices have predictably risen. He stressed he would never attack the government on this issue, but called on authorities like the National Revenue Agency, the executive and the Commission on Protection of Competition to be more active. He expressed hope that the war will end this month so that prices can stabilize.
Referring to the adoption of revisions to the the 2025 Budget Extension Act on Wednesday, Borissov said his party backed them. He noted that with the support of MRF-New Beginning, Parliament passed the 2025 Budget Extension Act and the Lobbying Activities Act. Borissov said he personally secured support from MRF-New Beginning, although in his view this should have been handled by Prime Minister Andrey Gurov.
The GERB leader also commented on a statement by European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi, who said earlier in the day that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office had no connection with Borissov’s detention in 2022. Kovesi specified that at that time the Office had not been conducting an investigation. Borissov thanked Kovesi, adding that the day of his detention [which was later declared unlawful by a Bulgarian court] had been the second worst day in his life after the day his mother died.
