Chinese Foreign Minister Visits Bulgaria, Holds Talks with PM, President, Bulgarian Counterpart 2026

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is visiting Bulgaria as part of a tour of Azerbaijan and the Balkans, held talks with Prime Minister Rumen Radev, President Iliana Iotova and Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova on Monday. Wang has already visited Croatia and Montenegro.
Radev and Wang held a one-on-one meeting before the Chinese delegation’s talks with the Bulgarian Prime Minister at the Council of Ministers.
The Prime Minister said he was pleased to welcome Wang back to Sofia, 11 years after his first visit. He described the visit as timely for both countries and the wider international community amid global uncertainty, and expressed hope that it would deepen and expand their traditionally friendly relations.
Radev noted that Bulgaria was the second country in the world to recognize the People’s Republic of China and establish diplomatic relations with it. He also recalled his 2019 visit to China, his talks with President Xi Jinping and the adoption of a declaration on strategic partnership, which he described as an important step in bilateral relations.
The Prime Minister also highlighted opportunities to improve connectivity between Europe and China, describing Bulgaria as an important gateway to Europe in transport, energy, agriculture and high technology.
Wang, in turn, highlighted the longstanding cooperation between the two countries and expressed Beijing’s readiness to deepen mutual political trust and advance tangible joint projects. He added that China wants to be a reliable and responsible partner in Bulgaria’s modernization.
Wang praised Radev’s strategic vision and pragmatic approach and expressed confidence that Bulgaria would make significant progress under his leadership. He added that Beijing expected cooperation to reach a higher level following the formation of Bulgaria’s new government.
The Chinese Foreign Minister also reaffirmed China’s willingness to develop friendly relations with countries around the world and promote what Beijing describes as a community with a shared future for humanity.
Later on Monday, President Iotova and Wang discussed the conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, agreeing that resolving them required active diplomatic efforts.
The President highlighted the adverse effects of wars on national economies and social systems. Wang recalled Iotova’s address to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York in September, which focused on peace and the importance of dialogue in overcoming differences between countries.
Both sides agreed that the joint declaration establishing a strategic partnership, signed in 2019, had given fresh impetus to bilateral relations. Iotova and Wang identified opportunities to deepen cooperation in trade, the economy, education and culture.
The President raised the possibility of establishing a direct air service between Sofia and Beijing and expressed hope that Bulgarian agricultural products would gain easier access to the Chinese market.
Wang said the formation of a regular Bulgarian government following the April parliamentary elections provided a stable foundation for strengthening the strategic partnership. He thanked Iotova for her continued support for the development of bilateral relations.
Wang also met with his Bulgarian counterpart, Velislava Petrova. The two discussed EU-China relations, the strategic partnership and connectivity between Europe and China. Wang highlighted cooperation on energy storage, which he said was helping Bulgaria become a European leader in energy storage capacity. He added that China was ready to deepen cooperation with Bulgaria in green development and artificial intelligence.
