The role of the president is to act as a balancer, presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said at a meeting with residents of Varna on Monday.
Gurov stressed that the head of State cannot draft budgets, run ministries or build motorways, but has the voice entrusted to him by the Bulgarian people and can focus public attention on major problems. Gurov said the president also has the ability to bring institutions together around the same table, demand solutions and monitor whether they are implemented and within what timeframes.
“Checks on the exercise of power must be in safe hands, so that when the government is doing the right thing, the president can support it, but when it makes mistakes, he can say ‘no’,” Gurov said. He emphasised that the head of state should not merely echo or serve as an extension of the executive branch, but must act as a corrective force.
Gurov said he was making four commitments, including working to safeguard Bulgaria’s security and independence and ensuring that the rules apply equally to everyone. He explained that he would identify problems and put forward proposed solutions. He also pledged to be a president for all Bulgarian citizens, regardless of where in the country they live.
“As a presidential ticket with Mr Kandev, we will use all our strength and skills to make Bulgaria the country we know it can be, the country we deserve and want to leave to our children – a European, democratic, secure and prosperous state,” he said.
