Daily Wire producer Dallas Sonnier has crowned himself the “patron saint of cancelled actors” after recruiting the controversial Jonathan Majors for the company’s latest output, Run Hide Fight: Infidels.
Sonnier and Run Hide Fight: Infidels writer/director Kyle Rankin spoke to Mediaite about Daily Wire’s newest release, which drops on the media company’s streaming service today. The film follows a Delta Force vet, played by Majors, who is visiting a college campus when Islamic terrorists hijack a pro-Palestine encampment.
The film’s trailer and clip of Majors’s character speaking about Islam “conquering” the West sparked controversy before the movie even dropped. Two Muslim advocacy groups came out and slammed the movie as Islamophobic.
Sue Obeidi, senior vice president of the Muslim Public Affairs Council Hollywood Bureau, called it an “anti-Muslim fantasy,” and Mehdi Hasan slammed it as plainly “bigoted.”
Sonnier is no stranger to controversy, having already produced a number of Daily Wire projects, including the original Run Hide Fight, also directed by Rankin, which centered on a high school shooting.
Another point of controversy for the movie is Majors himself. The actor was once a central part of Marvel’s future plans, being cast in the main villain role in an Avengers movie, only for that to be pulled amid Majors being convicted of third-degree assault and second-degree harassment in 2023.
“I think the industry gets mad at us and you know Dallas’s whole thing is giving these canceled actors another shot and you know they’d be fine if these people just went and stood in the corner and were never seen again it’s so ridiculous,” Rankin said about the casting of Majors.
The director said he was convinced to cast the actor after Sonnier recommended a film he led, Magazine Dreams.
Ranking described him as a professional on set who “took the idea of being number one on the call sheet very seriously.”
For Sonnier, this is far from the first controversial actor he’s worked with. He previously cast Vincent Gallo in his first role in nine years in Daily Wire’s Shut In, and he’s fresh of giving actor Armie Hammer his first role in some time in Frontier Crucible.
Sonnier waves off critics who have a problem with him pursuing actors who have been shunned by the industry over personal or political issues.
“I have in many ways become the patron saint of canceled actors and I’m happy to do that because I understand,” the producer said. “I’ve been attacked. I’ve been, you know , [people] attempted to cancel me or whatever and the truth is that’s some BS and, I don’t you know, I don’t play that way and so I’m going to work with the best actors available to me, whether it’s Mel Gibson, going back to Gina Carano, I worked with Armie Hammer, I’ve worked with James Franco twice — no one’s going to tell me I can’t work with someone.”
