Minister of Education and Science Georgi Valchev and the French Ambassador to Bulgaria, Marie Dumoulin, discussed cooperation in higher education and in research and development, partnering in STEM education, promoting Bulgarian studies and Bulgarian literature in France, and maintaining French language lessons in Bulgarian schools, the Education Ministry press service reported on Friday.
Valchev said: “We have excellent established partnerships with numerous French universities. We want to encourage cooperation between higher education institutions in both countries and the sharing of infrastructure and human resources.” He noted that one of the priorities of his ministry is to build a closer link between universities and the real economy in the coming years, for which it will also rely on France’s experience.
Dumoulin said that France is Bulgaria’s key partner in the European Union with regard to research and development, which is a source of pride, but more can also be achieved. She emphasized the need for students and young researchers to become more familiar with opportunities for mobility and professional development in the European Union, as well as to acquire knowledge and skills aligned with the needs of the economy.
Dumoulin expressed interest in the Ministry of Education and Science’s policies for expanding STEM education in Bulgaria. She expressed hope that, at the same time, enhanced French language lessons will maintain their standing in Bulgaria’s schools. Valchev said that policies aimed at training more specialists in the natural sciences do not come at the expense of educating young people to acquire a broad humanities-based education. He said: “Especially in higher education, universities must maintain their role in shaping individuals with a broad worldview who can understand the changing world and critically reflect on what is happening around them.” He added that teacher training programmes will be organized at the National STEM Centre in Sofia and at the regional centres in Shumen, Plovdiv, and Blagoevgrad, and France’s experience could prove to be useful in the process.
The two discussed opportunities to strengthen and develop Bulgarian studies in France as well as to promote contemporary Bulgarian literature among the French public. Valchev said: “This is not a desire for its own sake. We are looking for ways to ensure that our contemporary literature, created by a very talented generation of Bulgarian authors, reaches more French readers.” He pointed to Prof. Marie Vrinat, whose translations have contributed to the French public becoming acquainted with the works of a number of contemporary Bulgarian writers.
At the meeting, it was reported that approximately 1,400 children attend Bulgarian Sunday schools in France. The two countries will continue to cooperate in supporting these schools, the Ministry of Education concluded.
