Bulgaria is seeking to strengthen its tourism industry by making traditional cuisine, quality agricultural products and local wines central to its tourism identity. This was discussed at a conference in Plovdiv on Friday, organized by the University of Food Technologies (UFT) and the National Board of Tourism, with institutional support from the Tourism Ministry.
Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov emphasized the importance of Bulgarian food and wine in attracting visitors and improving the country’s competitiveness as a destination. Gastronomy and wine tourism offer opportunities to showcase Bulgaria’s cultural identity, encourage longer stays and promote travel beyond the traditional summer season, he pointed out.
Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovsky also highlighted the importance of promoting high-quality Bulgarian food and wine to attract tourists. According to him, stronger links between agriculture and tourism can increase demand for local products, support domestic producers and improve the international visibility of Bulgarian culinary traditions. He noted that traditional foods and indigenous grape varieties are valuable assets that can distinguish Bulgaria in a competitive tourism market.
The University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv, as the academic host, stressed the need for closer cooperation between food producers and scientific and educational institutions. Such partnerships can support innovation, improve product quality and help traditional Bulgarian foods reach new markets, UFT Rector Prof. Galin Ivanov emphasized.
On food security and consumer protection, Maya Manolova, Chair of the Commission for Consumer Protection, pointed out that food security and fair prices remain top priorities for Bulgaria. She added an important social dimension to the tourism strategy, namely that promoting high-quality products must go hand in hand with reliable food supplies, transparent markets and affordability for consumers.
At the regional level, Plovdiv Regional Governor Georgi Yanev underlined the opportunity to turn local culinary heritage into a competitive advantage. He said that regional specialities, traditional recipes, wineries and food-related cultural events can be incorporated into gastronomic routes and tourism packages, benefiting restaurants, farmers, wine producers and smaller communities.
