Balgarianovinite.com The first of 17 next-generation computed tomography (CT) scanners to be provided to regional hospitals across Bulgaria under a Health Ministry project is being installed at Haskovo Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment. The equipment is intended for the diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases and will be used jointly by diagnostic imaging and neurology specialists.
The equipment is a Siemens Somatom X.cite 128-slice CT scanner and is part of a major investment under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases.
“This is the first installation of a scanner of this type. It will enable interventional diagnosis of cerebrovascular disease and allow patients to be referred to centres for endovascular treatment,” Haskovo Hospital Deputy Director Dr Ivan Ivanov told BTA.
Ivanov said the new equipment offers improved diagnostic capabilities and is intended to facilitate the rapid diagnosis of stroke, including in patients eligible for thrombolysis. When necessary, the data will also be available for processing and consultation by specialists at other medical establishments.
An artificial intelligence server will also be connected to the equipment to assist in processing the data obtained. “Artificial intelligence does not replace doctors but supports their work,” Ivanov said. The system will be connected to the other centres, providing access to a database containing information on a large number of patients and allowing individual cases to be consulted with specialists in other cities.
Ivanov told BTA that the hospital has also secured the medical staff needed to operate the new equipment. The Diagnostic Imaging Department has three specialists and three resident physicians who have experience with the hospital’s diagnostic equipment, including its magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.
The Siemens team, which arrived in Haskovo from Italy on Thursday morning, is expected to complete the installation within a week. The necessary administrative procedures and commissioning of the equipment will follow, with the scanner expected to become operational within several weeks.
Haskovo Hospital Chief Nurse Petya Kalinova is responsible for ensuring the conditions necessary for the operation of the new equipment and for the relevant organisation within the hospital.
The project provides for the establishment of six high-tech cerebrovascular centres at the N. I. Pirogov University Multiprofile Hospital for Active Treatment and Emergency Medicine, St Ivan Rilski University Hospital and St Anna University Hospital in Sofia, St George University Hospital in Plovdiv, Dr Georgi Stranski University Hospital in Pleven, and St Marina University Hospital in Varna. The centres will provide treatment and training for medical specialists in diagnostic imaging, neurology and neurosurgery, including in the treatment of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations and fistulas, and acute stroke.
Cerebrovascular disease diagnostic centres will also be established at 17 regional hospitals. The aim is for patients to be diagnosed at the regional centres and, where necessary, for their cases to be reviewed and referred in real time to the high-tech centres for specialized endovascular treatment.
