Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria’s Kozlouy N-plant is forced to reduce its output as the Danube is receding amid unprecedented drought. The Energy Ministry announced Thursday that it will “preventively lower the output of Kozloduy’s Unit 5 by some 120 MW on August 21”.
Unit 5 has a capacity to generate just over 1,000 MW.
The decision is part of the measures aiming to ensure the safe operation of the N-plant.
It is the first time in the 52-year history of the N-plant that it is forced to reduce its output due to extreme weather conditions.
The forecast is for the Danube to continue receding in the Bulgarian section, the Energy Ministry said.
The Ministry said that a work group for crisis management was established at Kozloduy in early June as the Danube level started dropping and the forecast was for extended drought in Western and Central Europe. A procedure was set in place with all necessary measures for ensuring the safe operation of the N-plant.
Kozloduy uses water from the Danube to cool the steam in the condensers located in the non-nuclear part of the plant. The Danube is not used for cooling the nuclear reactors. Water is supplied by the plant’s own shore-based pumping station, which was designed and built to ensure the necessary water volumes even at low river levels.
Kozloduy has so far been able to operating normally and ensure the security of the national and regional energy system under conditions in which a number of nuclear units in European countries along the Danube have been shut down or their output reduced to the technological minimum, the Energy Ministry recalled.
At the beginning of August, the operation of Hungary’s only nuclear power plant, Paks, was gradually reduced to critically low levels as the Danube dropped to record-low levels. In Romania, Unit 1 of the Cernavoda N-plant was shut down at the end of July and the country declared a nationwide state of heightened alert in the energy sector for the whole of August.
