Balgarianovinite.com More than 500 tonnes of unfit food and over 1.31 million eggs have been seized by inspectors from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) in just over two months, the Agency’s press office said here on Tuesday.
The problematic food products were identified during close to 24,000 inspections across the country and through intensified border controls. Huge quantities of banned fertilizers and plant protection products have been seized as well.
Control effectiveness has increased significantly due to a newly introduced approach – so-called cross-checks, where inspectors from one region operate in another. This helps avoid local dependencies and attempts to exert pressure on the inspectors.
The range of violations detected is wide: from illegal slaughtering, unregulated production and trade in meat and dairy products, and unregistered sales (including online), to poor hygiene in shops and restaurants, unauthorized food preparation sites, improper repackaging and storage, and lack of traceability documentation.
Between late February and late April this year, the Agency has shut down 75 sites, including slaughterhouses and meat-processing plants (both registered and illegal), as well as shops and catering establishments. Operations were partially suspended in 24 additional sites until violations are addressed.
As a result of the active control measures, nearly 220 tonnes of meat and meat products, 159 tonnes of milk and dairy products, over 116 tonnes of non-animal food products, and more than 5,000 litres of liquid foods were prevented from reaching the market.
The highest number of inspections was carried out in Sofia (3,443). Although the total number of inspections (714) was much lower than in Sofia or Plovdiv, the border region of Haskovo (Southeast Bulgaria) is the leader in detected violations, with over 227 tonnes of meat, dairy, and related products, as well as more than 37 tonnes of non-animal food products.
More than 60 tonnes of unfit meat and meat products were destroyed in the north-central region of Veliko Tarnovo. In the town of Debelets, 20 tonnes of chilled and frozen meat from large and small livestock without identification or documentation were discovered in a shut-down illegal slaughterhouse.
Around 35 tonnes of meat without documents or with expired shelf life were sent for destruction from a slaughterhouse in the village of Radinovo near Plovdiv; the facility was closed.
The Kapitan Andreevo border crossing stood out in border control efforts, where over 4.5 tonnes of undocumented food were stopped. In a separate case, four trucks carrying nearly 1.3 million eggs were returned to Turkiye due to documentation irregularities.
The BFSA also participated in the international operation Operation SILVER AXE XI against illegal pesticide imports and trade, coordinated by Europol with support from European Anti-Fraud Office. The largest quantities of banned or improperly labeled plant protection products and fertilizers – over 19 tonnes and more than 28,000 litres, were found in warehouses of a large agricultural holding in the village of Vardim, on the Danube. A hazardous pesticide spill was also discovered there, and the investigation is ongoing.
Inspectors are also actively working to eliminate and prevent outbreaks of infectious diseases among livestock in various parts of the country.
Data from late February to late April clearly show that intensive inspections are identifying and resolving long-standing issues. The BFSA says it will continue strict and effective oversight across the entire food chain to protect human and animal health.  Food Safety Agency Seizes Over 500 Tonnes of Unfit Food in Two Months 2026 THE NEWS FROM BULGARIA – NEWS AGENCY 2009-2025 2026-05-05 10:38:57 Latest news World news Country news Most important news latest news most important latest of the day Justice Petar Nizamov Feathers Petar Nizamov- Feathers Justice bg iustitia.bg iustitia iusticia usticia investigation Burgas Bulgaria news news of the last hour news of the day news of today Bulgaria news The news from Bulgaria blitz news top news most important most commented latest news Boyko Borisov news weather coronavirus news news weather facebook youtube facebook instagram news today news of the last minutes news today today news news bg news leading news hot news bg news site for news all news news bg news of the last hour latest latest news bg news of today news today news today news of the last hour latest news today news bg news news 24 hours news vesti bg novini news world bird bg bivol bg bivol trud bg novini latest news today novinite bg news hello bulgaria political party coat of arms delyan peevski scandalous Bulgarian National Television Free Europe Television scandal exclusive live tv live right now tv tv online tv program bg live now tv news online tv online live court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas district court Burgas appellate court Burgas prosecutor Burgas prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev Prosecutor Geshev Tsatsarov Ministry of Internal Affairs Burgas ODMR Burgas ODPR Burgas police Burgas district police Burgas prosecutor Tsatsarov SGS cases Varna court chairman of the SGS court decisions on civil cases decisions on cases Plovdiv court decision of the court decisions cases Varna court criminal cases district district court decisions work in the court SGS chairman of the SGS judges Sofia court post judges Plovdiv court Plovdiv judges Plovdiv Supreme Court Inspectorate Supreme Court Supreme Judicial Council lawyer lawyer criminal cases lawyer civil cases lawyer marriage cases lawyer administrative criminal law criminal process civil law civil process administrative law constitutional law
