The Council of Ministers has approved additional expenditure of EUR 8,692,000 under the 2026 budget of the Ministry of Energy, the government said in a press release on Tuesday. The funding will cover the final indexation and completion of the contract for the construction of Phase 1 of the National Radioactive Waste Repository, for which the State Enterprise Radioactive Waste is the contracting authority. The funding was approved in implementation of a Council of Ministers decision of January 15, 2026, and will provide the resources needed to finalise the contractual arrangements for the construction of the repository’s first phase.
In a separate decision, the government approved EUR 23,266,118 for the Ministry of Energy to finance completed stages of projects funded by the Modernisation Fund. The approved funding will cover payments for project stages that have already been completed. The money will come from funds allocated in the 2026 central budget, meaning the decision will not entail additional expenditure for the state budget. The decision is intended to ensure continuity in the financing and implementation of Modernisation Fund projects aimed at modernising and developing Bulgaria’s energy sector.
