Greece has agreed to purchase US weapons and military equipment worth a total of USD 4 billion during US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s visit to Athens, the online edition of the Kathimerini daily reported on Thursday.
Around USD 1.2 billion will be allocated to the purchase of missiles and precision-guided aerial bombs for the Hellenic Air Force. They will be intended for both the F-16 fighter jets currently in service and the 20 F-35 aircraft, deliveries of which to Greece are expected to begin in late 2029.
Around USD 1 billion will be used for the future upgrade of 37 Greek F-16 Block 50 fighter jets to the Viper configuration. Greece already operates 83 F-16 Vipers, Kathimerini notes.
According to the daily, the modernisation of Greece’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
A further USD 800 million will be allocated to the maintenance of the older F-16 aircraft, while USD 750 million has been earmarked for follow-on support for MH-60 naval helicopters and Black Hawk helicopters, deliveries of which to Greece are due to begin next year.
