The Heraclea Sintica archaeological site and its adjoining theme park in Petrich Municipality have been named among the 20 winners of the 2026 New European Bauhaus Prizes, selected from more than 800 applications, the municipal administration said on Tuesday. The ceremony for the presentation of the NEB Prizes 2026 awards took place in Brussels.
Petrich Mayor Dimitar Bratchkov accepted the award and emphasized that the project, funded under Bulgaria’s 2014–2020 Regions in Growth programme, combines heritage preservation, environmental protection and sustainable tourism.
Located in the Rupite area, the park integrates ancient ruins, natural landscapes and contemporary design while improving accessibility. Its facilities include a modern interpretation of Roman baths using local mineral water and a digital hall that brings the history of Heraclea Sintica to life.
The award recognizes the project’s innovative approach to preserving cultural heritage while creating an accessible, sustainable and engaging visitor experience.
