Former White House press secretary Katie Zacharia insists she remains “proud” she accepted President Donald Trump’s offer to join his administration, opening up to a New York Post columnist friend, Joel Pollak, about the lessons she took from a turbulent five-day stint that ended almost as quickly as it began.

Zacharia, back in California within a week of taking Washington’s highest-profile communications jobs, addressed the experience in an interview with The Post published Monday.
Asked whether she regretted taking the job, Zacharia pointed instead to what she wanted her children to take from the experience.

“I’m proud I said yes, stood firm in what I believe, and kept supporting the president even when the circumstances weren’t ideal for me – showing my children what courage looks like in the face of criticism,” she said.
As for what five days inside the Trump White House taught her, Zacharia said: “The biggest lessons are to stay true to your character, focus on the work in front of you, and refuse to be defined by the critics.”
Her extraordinarily brief tenure began with a rocky first briefing in which critics spotlighted that she appeared nervous, leaned heavily on a prepared statement and took only three questions. Zacharia later told The Post she had awakened at 3 a.m. to prepare after receiving finalized materials only hours beforehand.

She also faced scrutiny for describing herself as a “lawyer,” despite never passing a state bar exam. Zacharia, who holds a law degree from Pepperdine, maintained that she had consulted legal professionals before using the term.
“The ABA Journal’s January 2025 piece draws the exact distinction I relied on… Before any Fox or media appearances I consulted attorneys and legal professionals who confirmed it was appropriate to identify as a lawyer — given my Pepperdine JD and experience,” she told The Post.
Her departure followed two difficult Fox News interviews that Zacharia herself had pushed to arrange, according to messages subsequently obtained by The Post. Trump ultimately told her the position was not the right fit.

Zacharia nevertheless rejected the suggestion that Trump had placed her in an impossible position.
“Answering the president’s call to serve was an honor, and my kids were able to see their mom step up for one of the most sought-after jobs in the world,” she said.
Days after leaving, she was still publicly praising Trump and, by her own account, treating the shortest chapter of her political career as one she was glad she accepted.
