‘I’m Not a Killer!’ Man Nabbed in Trump Crackdown on Illegal Voters Rips ‘Excessive’ Feds 2026
Jon Stewart tore into President Donald Trump’s controversial diesel deal with Russia on Monday night, calling the arrangement “insane” as he pulled out a Russian nesting doll to illustrate the “layers of stupidity” he saw in the administration’s publicly explained rationale.
The Daily Show host spent much of his monologue unpacking Trump’s October deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which allows Russia to supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets as the administration tries to bring down fuel prices.
Trump then moved Friday to waive key sanctions and tariffs imposed under the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act.
“Wait, if Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is the cause of this, why are we making a deal to give Russia billions of dollars to use in that invasion?” the host asked. “Perhaps Energy Secretary Christopher Wright can explain it. And if I may use a visual aid to help me with this explanation.”
As the audience laughed, he added: “I just wanted a physical demonstration of the many layers of stupidity that must be behind this decision.”
The host produced a Russian doll, as he rolled back Wright’s cable news appearances defending the policy over the weekend.
“If Russia can bring additional diesel to the market and export it, it would benefit American consumers, drive down energy prices for Americans,” Wright said in the clip.

“Oh!” Stewart remarked. “Oh, that’s not stupid at all. This is going to lower fuel prices for Americans, will it?”
He then played another clip of an ABC News reporter saying, “That immediate release of 300,000 tons of diesel would have a very little effect or impact on prices long-term.”
“Ah,” the host interjected, removing a layer of the doll: “So, why are we doing it?”
Cutting to the clip of Wright, the secretary explained: “Oh, this is pressuring Russia!”
Stewart popped open another layer of the doll.
“By giving them money?!” he erupted. “How is this punishing Russia Oh, I’m sorry, I apologize. “It’s kind of a mo’ money, mo’ problems situation?”

“Russia does not have diesel to export,” Wright said in a further clip.
“So why are we giving them money for it?” Stewart retorted.
Returning to the CNN interview, Wright continued: “The only way they can get additional diesel to export is if they turn down the conflict with Ukraine. They have to either get an energy ceasefire, they have to either end the war, or they have to reduce their war efforts. This is a motivation for Russia to figure out how they can actually export some diesel.”
That explanation left Stewart incredulous as he pulled multiple layers from his Russian doll: “Why would we motivate a group to sell diesel when we just put sanctions on them for selling diesel? Doing the opposite within a month is insane. It is illogical. It is incoherent!”
“This is quite innovative, actually,” Wright insisted in a final clip.
“Damn you, alliteration!” Stewart exclaimed, before pivoting: “I think I might have discovered the real reason!”
