A US military aircraft has patrolled over the Black Sea amid the deteriorating security environment. In response to a question from BTA about the aircraft, the Bulgarian Defence Ministry said that the patrol was part of measures to step up vigilance in the Black Sea region in view of the deteriorating security environment.
Last week, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov said that Bulgaria had requested air patrols from its NATO allies. “We have sent letters and a request to NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) Alexus Grynkewich to strengthen our capabilities, at the very least to demonstrate force over our territory and in our territorial waters. We have requested the full range of possible capabilities – missile systems, anti-drone systems and patrol aircraft,” the minister explained, adding that a decision on the request was expected.
On October 19, the Defence Ministry said it is stepping up surveillance along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast using unmanned aerial vehicles. The activities are part of preventive measures to enhance security and ensure timely information about the situation in the area.
Four vessels in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea have been attacked over the past month, two of which sank.
