Opening Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Rumen Radev accused Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) Chair Delyan Peevski and GERB leader Boyko Borissov of returning to their familiar arrogant rhetoric and conduct.
He said it was a well-known maxim that a lack of justice and punishment for looting bred a sense of impunity and hubris.
Radev said the two were highly agitated because they could no longer cobble together governing arrangements with power-hungry political partners willing to engage in grotesque political incest. They could no longer dictate to the government and were losing control over financial flows, he said. Their lieutenants no longer determined how public contracts were awarded, while frontmen would find it increasingly difficult to conceal what had been looted, he added.
Radev said he expected Peevski and Borissov to become increasingly agitated.
“Because until now, all efforts by the State Agency for National Security and the Interior Ministry to produce significant findings have foundered in the prosecution service, at both central and regional level,” Radev said. That had begun to change on Tuesday with the detention of Sungurlare’s mayor, he added.
Sungurlare was hardly the centre of corruption, but the detention marked a start because principled and courageous Bulgarian prosecutors at district level had finally sided with justice and helped get everyone involved to talk, Radev said. The scheme was beginning to unravel, and he expected this to be only the start.
Radev said he had made clear when the government took office that it would not repeat other governments’ mistakes or exceed its powers. The government would respect the separation of powers and act entirely within the law, he said. It would not stop, however, until law enforcement agencies reached the top of the oligarchic pyramid, he added.
