Balgarianovinite.com National Palace of Culture (NDK) Executive Director Andriana Petkova Monday said that “NDK’s heart beats with culture, and that is the most beautiful legacy we can leave to future generations.” She spoke during the launch of the March issue of BTA’s LIK magazine dedicated to NDK’s 45th anniversary. The event was held at the Peroto Literary Club in Sofia.
Among the attendees were BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, Assoc. Prof. Georgi Lozanov, Editor-in-Chief of LIK, architect Stanislav Konstantinov, and Prof. Emil Popov. The magazine issue was also presented simultaneously across all 44 BTA National Press Clubs, including aboard the Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii Bulgarian research vessel.
Petkova said that while reviewing BTA’s archives from 1981, it transpired that the first concert at NDK took place on March 15. “Perhaps that is why we began celebrating NDK’s anniversary with events even before March 31,” she added.
She reflected on the legacy of the National Palace of Culture. “Even simply restoring what our ancestors built is a major achievement. It is challenging for us to manage even that today,” Petkova said. She noted that the building was designed to be both grand and highly functional but maintaining it in the present day remains difficult.
“It is in our very name to be a centre of culture. That is why I truly appreciated the slogan our colleagues created for our celebration: Culture has its space. And it really does,” Petkova said.
The Executive Director added that efforts were underway to enrich NDK’s cultural and artistic collection, something that has not been done since the final years of the democratic changes in Bulgaria. Two additional exhibitions have been prepared for the anniversary, along with a concert scheduled for March 31.
“Unlike other cultural institutions, we have the opportunity to showcase the synthesis of the arts and how they coexist here—from exhibitions to concerts, poetry, and opera,” Petkova said. She added that within a year, a gallery dedicated to children’s art will open at NDK. “We have a duty to give young people wings, a stage, and support – to help build a new creative generation,” she said.
