Balgarianovinite.com The newly elected leader of Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB), Radan Kanev, Sunday said on Nova TV that he has not been mandated by the party for a joint presidential candidate with GERB but with the right-wing opposition. He was commenting on GERB leader Boyko Borissov’s statement that centre-right parties should field a joint presidential ticket. “It is a great comfort to me that my position aligns with the mandate I received,” Kanev added.
Earlier on Sunday, Borissov told reporters that only a joint presidential candidate of the parties united in the European People’s Party and the liberal political family has a chance of winning the presidential election in autumn 2026.
“I do not see why we should currently define GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms as the opposition,” Kanev commented further. According to him, both parties support proposals put forward by the current ruling formation.
“For the presidential elections, the mandate I have from the DSB is for the entire democratic opposition – and this categorically includes Continue the Change (CC) – to stand behind a single candidate,” Kanev announced.
He expects that in early autumn there will be a joint candidate who will be supported by Democratic Bulgaria and CC. He also expects Bulgarian citizens “with a reputation, established positions, trust, and authority” to declare their support for such a candidate as well.
“When we talk about building a solid right-wing alternative with an eye toward the next parliamentary elections – in accordance with the mandate I received as Chairman – this does not include CC, because, for their own reasons, they do not wish to define themselves as a right-wing political force,” Kanev added.
Kanev was elected DSB leader on Saturday by the delegates of the party’s National Convention.
