Balgarianovinite.com The Open Shumen International Rapid and Blitz Chess Tournament will take place on July 25 and 26 at Arena Shumen Hall, tournament director Atanas Dimitrov told BTA. Over 120 applications for the blitz tournament and more than 170 applications for the rapid tournament have already been received. Expected to participate are multiple tournament champion Grandmaster Martin Petrov, Grandmaster Vasil Spasov, and other leading chess players.
The rapid and blitz events are listed on the International Chess Federation (FIDE) calendar and will count toward FIDE ratings, Dimitrov explained. Rapid chess competitors will be divided into two tournaments, each consisting of 9 rounds. The blitz tournament will also consist of 9 rounds For the first time, the annual event will include a separate rapid chess tournament for children up to 14 years of age.
The first round of the rapid tournament is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on July 25. The first round of the blitz competition is expected to begin at 4:00 p.m. The awards ceremony for the winners will take place on July 26, following the conclusion of the rounds in the rapid chess tournament. The total prize fund is EUR 5,000.
