Parliament will hear Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev on reports of corrupt practices related to public procurement contracts for the installation of motorway guardrails, as well as the available information concerning the allocation of funds paid under such contracts to finance flights taken by Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski, the amount of the expenses paid for these flights, their invoicing, the individuals who paid the expenses, and information regarding persons associated with them. This is the first item on Thursday’s agenda.
The motion to hold a hearing of Minister Demerdzhiev on this topic was submitted by Petar Vitanov of Progressive Bulgaria and a group of MPs. The hearing was initially scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed because the Interior Minister was unable to attend the plenary session due to the murder of a businessman in Plovdiv (South Central Bulgaria).
On September 18, the Interior Minister told a briefing that companies involved in the supply of guardrails diverted funds to a shell company, which in turn paid for private flights taken by Peevski. In early July, Demerdzhiev said that the MRF leader had taken 227 flights from Sofia Airport between 2018 and 2026, 181 of them on private jets at a cost of EUR 1.8 million.
