President Iliana Iotova presented the national flag to the 35th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition at a ceremony in the Coat of Arms Hall at the President’s Administration on Tuesday. Expedition head Prof. Christo Pimpirev received the flag.
Iotova said that the expedition embodies the courage, strength, professionalism and knowledge of Bulgarian scientists and polar science. She described Antarctica as a continent that preserves not only the memory of the past but also clues to the planet’s future.
“The national flag will fly proudly over our base on Livingston Island,” the President said, adding that the Bulgarian tricolour will represent the country’s scientific achievements.
Iotova said Pimpirev had become an emblem of polar science not only in Bulgaria but internationally. “Your authority, knowledge, commitment to the polar continent and reputation have long extended beyond the borders of our country,” she said.
She expressed confidence that research conducted by Bulgarian expeditions will become increasingly ambitious and successful as the programme expands and international cooperation deepens.
Iotova said the expedition also demonstrated the value of international cooperation at a time of global tension. “Joint projects, scientific research, communication and cooperation are the path to the development of our planet and contribute to Bulgaria’s international standing,” she said.
Members of the 35th Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition and official guests attended the ceremony.
The 34th expedition in the 2025-2026 season was among the most successful in the history of Bulgaria’s presence in Antarctica. The St Kliment Ohridski Bulgarian Antarctic Base on Livingston Island supported work on 35 Bulgarian and international research projects, while a modern laboratory block was put into operation.
The 35th expedition will focus primarily on 18 research projects by Bulgarian teams. Researchers from Brazil, Ecuador, Germany, Greece, Colombia, China, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Romania, the United States and Uruguay will also take part.
The Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) is due to sail from the Port of Varna on November 4 on its fifth mission to Livingston Island, Antarctica.
