Interior Minister Demerdzhiev Calls for Practical Results from International Anti-Corruption Cooperation 2026

Bulgaria’s goal is to turn international anti-corruption standards into tangible results, including effective investigations, tracing criminal financial flows and limiting opportunities to conceal illicit assets, Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said during a meeting with Brigitte Strobel-Shaw, a representative of the Secretariat of the Global Operational Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network), the Interior Ministry reported on Tuesday.
The GlobE Network operates under the auspices of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
The meeting focused on strengthening international cooperation against corruption, financial crime and the concealment of illegally acquired assets.
Demerdzhiev said corruption increasingly crossed national borders and was closely linked to organized crime and money laundering.
According to him, an effective response required not only strong national institutions but also rapid international cooperation to prevent offenders from exploiting differences between legal systems.
The participants discussed opportunities to make greater use of GlobE Network mechanisms to establish direct contacts between competent authorities, facilitate timely information exchange and support cross-border investigations.
Particular attention was paid to tracing illicit assets, including those concealed through complex international financial structures and cryptocurrencies, as well as the potential of new technologies to improve the effectiveness of financial investigations.
Demerdzhiev is on a working visit to Austria. Speaking at the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime in Vienna, he also called for stronger international cooperation in combating organized crime.
