Presidential candidate Iliana Iotova said on Sunday that she has the confidence of an experienced politician who has made difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions, but has always done so with the support and encouragement of Bulgarian citizens. Iotova, who is running as an independent candidate nominated by an initiative committee, held a campaign meeting in Yambol.
“I have the confidence of a person with experience, someone who has more than once made very difficult and sometimes very unpopular decisions, but I have always done so with the support and encouragement of Bulgarians. That gives me strength today as well,” Iotova said.
She thanked supporters for what she described as a positive and emotional meeting in Yambol. “I have known and worked with the people of Yambol for a long time. I had an office here when I was a member of the European Parliament. We also ran an academy for young politicians,” she added.
Iotova said that as an MEP she had worked extensively on the security of the European Union’s external border, including Bulgaria’s. “I brought my fellow MEPs here so that we could see what was needed. Through joint efforts, Bulgaria succeeded and now has sufficient funding for border protection,” she said, expressing hope that sufficient resources would also be provided in the EU’s next multiannual budget.
Iotova said she had long known what kind of election campaign to expect. “I was warned, including by people from among my opponents. When you do not have many opportunities for a real discussion, when you feel unprepared, have no arguments and cannot respond to the expectations of Bulgarian citizens, what remains are smear campaigns,” Iotova said.
