Balgarianovinite.com Sailor Pavlin Nadvorni arrived on Wednesday in his hometown of Varna after a solo around-the-world voyage aboard the yacht Espresso Martini, the Varna Municipality said.
Nadvorni stepped onto Bulgarian soil shortly after 5 pm after covering thousands of nautical miles through some of the world’s most dangerous waters. His homecoming turned into one of the most emotional maritime events in recent years, with dozens of citizens, sailing enthusiasts and representatives of yacht clubs gathering at Varna Port to welcome him.
The Espresso Martini reached the quay escorted by an entire flotilla and to the sound of the march The Silent White Danube, performed by the Representative Brass Band of the National Guards Unit of Bulgaria under the baton of Captain 3rd Rank Georgi Zayranov.
On behalf of Varna Municipality, Deputy Mayor Sofiya Koleva presented Nadvorni with a laurel wreath marking the successful completion of his solo circumnavigation. “This achievement will remain forever recorded in Bulgaria’s maritime history. Thank you for showing that willpower and spirit are stronger than any challenge – this is an excellent example for all of us,” Koleva said.
Nadvorni was welcomed by cadets from the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy, students from St. Nicholas the Wonderworker Varna Maritime High School and Nikola Vaptsarov Primary School, as well as representatives of maritime institutions and the sailing community.
Among those attending the ceremony was Captain Nikolay Dzhambazov, the first Bulgarian before Nadvorni to round Cape Horn solo during a world voyage in 1985. Dzhambazov is listed in the International Association of Cape Horners, an achievement regarded as a landmark in Bulgarian sailing history.
Nadvorni began his challenge on October 21, 2023, when he departed from A Coruna as a participant in the prestigious Global Solo Challenge. On February 13, 2024, he was forced to suspend his participation in New Zealand because of an injury requiring treatment and recovery.
He resumed the voyage on January 12, 2026, from Lyttelton and successfully rounded the legendary and extremely dangerous Cape Horn on February 21, 2026.
According to the Municipality, the solo circumnavigation by the Varna sailor is an example of endurance, courage and perseverance, qualities that transform a sporting achievement into a true human feat.
