Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) again sounded the alarm over what he alleged to be a “club” of furries whose members also work as airline pilots, telling a TMZ DC reporter to “follow the information.”
Tuberville, who is currently running for governor of Alabama, first raised the bizarre issue Tuesday on the Senate floor.
“Many airline pilots, flight attendants, and air traffic controllers are part of the furry community,” he said. Furries are people interested in anthropomorphic animal characters, often creating their own animal personas.
“Lord help us,” Tuberville went on. “It’s terrifying when you think about this. When you walk onto a commercial flight, it’s possible that the pilot flying your plane could have a deranged fetish of dressing up like an animal.”
“Dude, you went viral yesterday,” TMZ DC’s Jacob Wasserman told the Alabama senator on Thursday, referring to his Senate floor speech. “Expand on that for me.”
“All you gotta do is look at their convention,” Tuberville responded. He’s posted on X about a recent gathering called “Furry Migration” in Minneapolis that he says had an “Aviation Furs Meet-up.”
“You gotta call it what it is,” he continued. “We’ve got a huge mental illness problem in this country.”
“How do we know that pilots are furries?” asked Wasserman.
“Some. Not all,” Tuberville clarified. “They have a club. They have an organization. All you gotta do is follow the information.”
Wasserman, trailing the senator down a set of stairs, then followed up, “You’re saying that there’s a furry club and there’s a pilot section in the furry club?”
“Exactly right,” confirmed Tuberville. “Obviously, it’s probably not a whole lot of ’em, but it’s just unfortunate.”
“If you’re a pilot and you’re good at flying a plane, but you act like a cat, as long as you’re a good pilot, I mean, who really cares?” remarked Wasserman.
“I don’t want somebody flying me that, behind the scenes, they think they’re an animal,” stressed the senator.
“Even if they’re a good pilot?” pressed TMZ DC.
“It’s some part of mental illness that could be a catastrophe,” Tuberville concluded.
