The film She Who Remains, based on the novel of the same name by Bulgarian writer Rene Karabash, premiered at Sofia’s Lumiere Cinema on Thursday evening as part of the CineLibri book-to-film festival. The novel was shortlisted for this year’s International Booker Prize.
The event’s special guest was Albanian actress Altea Lazaj, who plays Bekia and her alter ego Matia.
Following the premiere at Lumiere Cinema, audiences met with Rene Karabash, who also wrote the screenplay, and the film’s director, Kostadin Bonev.
Karabash told the viewers about her work with Bonev. “The creative process was very enjoyable because it is incredibly exciting to meet someone who shares your sensibility, or even has exactly the same one. Kostadin gave me complete freedom with the screenplay, and he also contributed, so we created a good story. The language of cinema required us to develop some characters and storylines further, and I hope people liked the film,” she said.
“Working on the film was a process in which I felt that Rene and I were in constant communication, like two computers connected to each other,” Bonev said.
“After tonight’s screening, I am overwhelmed with emotion. I even feel that I am about to cry. Many thanks to everyone who came! I will go so far as to say that I do not merely hope people liked the film; I think it is a masterpiece, however immodest that may sound. I hope every viewer found something for them in it. I must admit that I did not know Rene Karabash, but now that we have got to know each other and made this film, I feel like her ‘plus one’,” Lazaj said.
She Who Remains is a co-production between Bulgaria, Italy and Albania. The film’s cinematographer is Massimo Folletti.
The film will compete against eight other titles in the CineLibri competition programme. One of them is another Bulgarian production, the dark comedy Taxi to Heaven, directed by Ivan Nichev and Todor Chapkanov. It will have its premiere at Lumiere Cinema on October 24, attended by members of the crew. The film is an adaptation of “Night Watch”, a novella by prominent Austrian writer of Bulgarian origin Dimitré Dinev.
