Sofia Municipality offered free tours, museum visits and interactive experiences on Sunday to mark World Tourism Day, the Municipality said.
The programme included free admission to Muzeiko, the Museum of Illusions and the interactive spaces Phenomena, VIDENIE and MINA, as well as guided tours of Vrana Palace and South Park. Advance registration was required for many of the activities.
Free guided tours of Vrana Palace began at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., with up to 20 participants in each group.
A birdwatching tour organized jointly with the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds took place in South Park at 9 a.m. Participants learnt about the bird species found in Sofia and biodiversity in an urban environment. More than 200 bird species have been recorded in the capital, according to the Municipality.
Two historical city tours also took place aboard the Memory Tram, organized by the municipal Tourism enterprise together with the Sofia Platform Foundation. The tours, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., started at Lions’ Bridge and follow a route through central Sofia focusing on sites associated with the structures of power during the 1944-1989 period.
The World Tourism Day programme also provided 200 free places at Muzeiko between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. The Museum of Illusions offered free admission in organized groups every hour between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.
Free time slots were available at Phenomena throughout the day, while 124 visitors were able to visit VIDENIE free of charge between 12 p.m. and 9 p.m. MINA offered free admission to two of its interactive experiences.
Visitors can also obtain a badge and information materials about Sofia at the Tram 83, Chitalnyata and Sofia tourist information centres.
World Tourism Day has been observed annually on September 27 since 1980. This year’s programme in Sofia highlights, among other things, the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence in tourism.
