A Soviet-era 1964 Moskvitch 408 won the public choice award at the fourth retro car and motorcycle parade in Smolyan. More than 80 vintage cars and motorcycles from across the country were displayed at the event, organized by the Smolyan Auto-Moto Retro Club.
The oldest vehicle on display was a French-made 1922 Berliet 944, which attracted considerable interest from enthusiasts, who described it as a unique specimen.
For the fourth consecutive year, the retro parade has become a celebration for Smolyan residents, Deputy Mayor Andriyan Petrov told BTA. The large number of rare vehicles on display reflects growing interest in what has become a traditional local event, he said.
The vehicles represented different categories, but shared a common theme: the history of the automobile and its impact on people’s lives over the years, Petrov said. The exhibition featured vehicles dating from 1922 to classics from around 30 years ago, including cars that form part of automotive history. Classic cars remain part of everyday life and the country’s heritage, he added.
The owner of the Berliet 944, the only example of its kind in Bulgaria and a rare model in Europe, said it had been a highly successful and luxurious vehicle for its time. The model was produced after the First World War before production was discontinued. The car was restored over seven years by Nikolay Kolev of Varna and is now part of the collection of the Markovo Auto Museum.
Vasil Danailov described his US-made 1978 Lincoln as a rare collector’s car. Vehicles of that era were built differently, he said, with simpler designs, greater durability and large engines.
