During a National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFA) student protest on Thursday, Assoc. Prof. Valeriya Krachunova-Popova told BTA that the students had legitimate reasons to be dissatisfied, and their concerns must be heard by the institutions. The protest is calling for the resignation of the Rector, Prof. Miroslav Dachev.
Protesters gathered outside the Academy before marching to the Ministry of Education and Science. The demonstrations started in July over conflicts with the Academy’s management, concerns about academic freedom and NATFA’s participation in the European University Alliance FilmEU, and were renewed in September.
Krachunova-Popova said students disagreed with the proposed extension granted to the rector at the latest meeting at the Education Ministry, but their views had not been taken into account. She stressed that institutions needed to pay attention to students’ concerns.
Outside the Ministry, protesters said that a meeting on September 18 discussed the rector’s proposal for a 30-day period to draw up a plan addressing the problems at the Academy. Thirteen days later, the committee that attended the meeting had still not issued an official recommendation, nor had any information been provided on progress with the plan, the students said.
They also reported that some of their colleagues from the Faculty of Screen Arts were unable to go on their planned Erasmus exchanges after being removed from the programme due to an error in the electronic grading system.
Dean of the Faculty, Assoc. Prof. Tsvetelina Tsvetkova, confirmed that students who had successfully passed their exams were included on a removal list because their grades had not been entered into the system.
