The weather and the press. If there is one topic we can always forecast as being hyped and yet consistently wrong, it would be meteorology. Hurricanes in particular are ripe for hype, but there is one compulsory aspect; you actually need them in order to use them for fodder.
There is always the climate-global-environmental-warming-change-crisis storyline, of course, that can be woven into almost any news item. Jake Tapper once tried to suggest climate contributes to earthquakes. Even basic weather news is something to contort and politicize, but hurricanes in particular are a favored item as they encompass all of the go-to tactics the press adores.
Alas. This year they are bereft of the built-in drama. We are more than past the midway point of the hurricane season, and not only have none struck the mainland, but there have been ZERO hurricanes to date. With only a handful of named storms forming, none have even built up to 60 miles per hour in strength.
Many in the media have marveled at this boring barometric byproduct. This, however, is not altogether surprising to those of us in the nation’s psych ward waiting room, Florida. This past winter I was talking at the tavern with other locals and commented that we would have a quiet hurricane session, due to this being a year of a Super El Niño.
That warm water cycle in the Pacific has adverse results in that ocean (Hawaii has been tagged twice so far). But the upper-level warmth it creates in the Jet Stream normally produces storm-dampening shear on our side of the map. Thus, Jim Cantore at The Weather Channel has been dashed from nabbing his go-bag and goggles and delivering remotes from inside a gale.
At The Atlantic, David Graham actually takes a novel approach to this lack of development with his latest offering: the lack of calamitous tempests is actually bad news!
If your head just tilted like a dog hearing a harmonica, the explanation is easy. It involves President Trump. Now you get it.
So far in this hurricane season, there has been a severe lack of activity in the Atlantic basin. This is problematic because this means there have been no fallout reports on Trump buggering rescue efforts. Graham laments that the lack of cyclonic activity means the president skirts being scalded for his inadequate response.
It is also great news for Trump, who must be one of the luckiest people in history. Hurricanes can help or, more often, badly hurt a president. Trump’s handling of storms during his first term was poor; he demonstrated little human warmth and, in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, jarring coldness.
Graham also had to dredge up a supposedly infamous moment from that first term, when President Trump created a maelstrom in the media when he drew on a hurricane chart in the Oval Office, suggesting Alabama might incur some of the effects of Hurricane Dorian, which at the time was sweeping Florida’s East coast.
Trump had a map of the projected storm center path, and with his Sharpie ad-lib, he drew an arc that carried over to the other state. The press blew furiously about this, suggesting Trump had lied and was unnecessarily causing panic. Things then were tamped down when it was shown that on CNN, where Brian Stelter had led the charges that Trump “lied” with his map, they had their own map issue by mislabeling Alabama in the process.

This led to competing public comments between Alabama weather field offices (saying there was no threat) and NOAA correcting them that a deviation might see their state experiencing some effects. This was followed by NOAA posting both the tracking map with the possible wind field range, and that showed Trump’s range had actually been accurate.
This “always wrong” approach to the president extends to today. Graham is convinced that FEMA is not properly prepared for a hurricane response. This is based on some of the past decisions made regarding that agency, not anything tangible to point to. He is complaining about a problem that has not emerged.
But then he delivers the real basis of all of this gloom over the good news about hurricanes.
If the president’s political luck continues, then perhaps the East Coast won’t see a really bad storm until after the midterm elections, or maybe even next year.
And there it is. What David Graham is truly upset about is that this lack of hurricanes means there is not one that can impact the upcoming election season. Well, there are still about two months remaining in the traditional window for storms.
We may yet see a serious storm system ravage the East Coast and deliver damage, hardship, and possibly even deaths. Maybe then Graham will have his happy ending?
