Joe Rogan admitted he doesn’t think he could bring himself to vote for socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) now, because he is too disgusted with Sanders for weakly caving to the “Democratic establishment” and allowing it to “rig” the 2016 presidential nomination in favor of Hillary Clinton.
Rogan vented on his Wednesday podcast he hasn’t looked at Sanders the same way ever since. The popular comic and podcaster started off by saying how much he loved Sanders back in the day, while sharing how the reaction to him publicly throwing his support behind the senator made him realize Democratic Party leaders did want Sanders to be president.
“That was the first time that I ever got attacked,” Rogan recalled. “Someone was on the podcast and they said, ‘Who are you going to vote for?’… and I said ‘If I was going to vote for anybody I’d probably vote for Bernie. He’s the one who makes the most sense. He’s the only guy who’s like anti-war, he wants to take a small amount of money from stock market speculation and use that to fund a bunch of these social programs.’ I’m like, ‘let’s see!’”
But Rogan said he was turned off by Sanders backing Clinton as the Dem nominee in 2016, following his strong showing in the primaries. Clinton won about 4 million more votes than Sanders in the primaries and had the support of the vast majority of Superdelegates.
“This was a long time ago, I don’t necessarily think that I would feel the same way anymore about him,” Rogan explained. “One of the reasons being he kind of gave into the Democratic Establishment, he let them run him over during that whole thing with Hillary where they rigged the primary.”
Rogan added, “He let them get away with stuff, when I think he should’ve put his foot down and said, ‘This is f*cked up. You guys are rigging the primary.’”
But what’s interesting is Rogan first endorsed Sanders on a January 2020 podcast with Bari Weiss — nearly four years after the “rigging” took place. Apparently Rogan has thought about it some more recently and isn’t happy with how Sanders handled it.
Still, his comments stand out, considering the kudos Rogan has given Sanders in recent years. He applauded Sanders for being “insanely consistent” in the aforementioned podcast with Weiss, and he told comic Andrew Schulz in 2022 he supported Sanders because he “genuinely looks out for the working class and genuinely wants to help people.”
Rogan’s pivot away from Sanders comes a month after he bashed democratic socialist candidates for being “f*cking nuts.”
