The Foreign Ministry recommends that Bulgarian citizens refrain from travelling along the US East Coast unless absolutely necessary due to an expected powerful storm and the anticipated deterioration in weather conditions, the Ministry said on its website on Saturday.
The storm is expected to affect the US East Coast from Maine to Washington, D.C. Forecasts call for torrential rain, flooding, strong wind gusts and dangerous rip currents. According to the latest weather forecasts, the New York City area is expected to be hit hardest. The storm is also expected to have a significant impact on New Jersey, eastern Long Island and southeastern Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and Nantucket. The governors of New York and New Jersey have declared states of emergency in the areas expected to face the most serious effects of the storm.
Local authorities are urging residents to take the warnings very seriously and adopt appropriate precautions. Power outages and major transport disruption are possible. The National Weather Service is forecasting wind gusts of up to 55 mph (about 89 km/h) in some areas, which could cause high waves and coastal flooding.
The Federal Aviation Administration has warned of possible air traffic disruptions at the three main airports serving the New York area. American Airlines, JetBlue and United Airlines have advised passengers to monitor the latest information on their flights and consider postponing travel in the northeastern United States between Friday and Sunday. Rail operator Amtrak has also warned of possible service disruptions in the region.
The storm is expected to coincide with the closing days of the General Debate of the UN General Assembly in New York, which could further complicate travel and transport services in the city.
