The European Commission (EC) has approved a EUR 170 million Bulgarian state aid scheme for farmers affected by higher fuel and fertilizer prices as a result of the crisis in the Middle East, the Commission said on Friday. The measure was developed under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), adopted by the EC on 29 April 2026.
The scheme is aimed at farmers engaged in primary agricultural production. The maximum aid intensity is up to EUR 50,000 per undertaking engaged in primary agricultural production and applies for the entire period covered by the Temporary Framework, until the end of 2026. When monitoring this ceiling, the total amount of aid received by a farmer for both gas oil and fertilizers is taken into account.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food said that the Management Board of the State Fund Agriculture is expected to approve the guidelines for implementing the aid. Payments are to be completed by the end of this year.
