Texas State Rep. Venton Jones (D) apologized for helping Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) to honor Chris Brown at a concert in Texas on Saturday.
“I want to offer an apology,” Jones said on Tuesday while appearing on Don Lemon’s show.
The Texas Democrat said he wanted to specifically apologize to Black women.
“I think this is a very important conversation around domestic violence and I want to offer my apology to Black women, to women and to anyone who has experienced domestic violence and really express that it was not my intention to stoke the traumas that go into that, as well as the background of this situation,” he said.
Jones and Crockett appeared with Brown at at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday where Jones presented Brown with a state resolution honoring his achievements in music and entertainment. Brown has been on tour with Usher.
“We are here because of Chris Brown!” Crockett declared to the crowd to applause.
She added about Brown being formally recognized, “We are experiencing Black joy at the highest level. And I wanted to make sure we document that at the congressional level. So let’s give it up again for Chris Brown.”
Jones told Lemon that he and Crockett were at the concert as part of voter outreach for the midterm elections.
“We were brought in to help and talk to and mobilize voters who need to be engaged right now in this very important election that we have going on in November. That was the work we were engaged in, and so little was seen in that clip,” he said.
Jones and Crockett received swift blowback from progressives for honoring Brown. The musician has been at the center of numerous legal issues, including restraining orders, and he pleaded guilty to felony assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna in 2009.
