The 15th Cirkolution Mini Art Fest will kick off in Sofia on Friday, the Mini Art Foundation said.
Toplocentrala will once again transform into a space for contemporary circus, music, movement and training, games, and encounters with artists from a variety of disciplines. Bulgaria’s only international festival of contemporary and social circus will offer audiences a diverse programme of performances, concerts, special events, free workshops, and outdoor demonstrations. This year, as in previous editions, most events are free of charge, while tickets for paid performances are available at symbolic prices, making contemporary circus accessible to a wide audience, the organizers added.
One of the most talked-about names on the contemporary European stage, the Spanish company Los Galindos will present MDR – Death from Laughter on September 26 and 27. Winner of numerous awards, including the Talía Award for Best Circus Performance, the Ciutat de Barcelona Award, and the Teatre Barcelona Award, the show combines circus, clowning, and physical theatre in an absurd and provocative farce. Three characters find themselves caught up in an incredible crime, a suspicious trial, and an absurd punishment, turning a story about friendship, guilt, and responsibility into an experience that is both hilarious and unsettling.
On September 25, the festival will open with Folk Circus, a dance-circus mini-show in which Bulgarian folk dances and music meet breakdancing and contemporary circus art. The project is a joint production of the Mini Art Foundation, choreographer Velizar Gutov, and director Dario Tabakov, with the participation of the Raina Knyaginya ensemble, Sofia City Breakers and clown Titania Chaos.
Also on Friday, audiences will be able to see Nine to Five, a solo performance without dialogue by Asaf Mor and Cie Circographie. Through clowning, juggling, and dance, the show takes a satirical look at contemporary work culture. The story of an overworked, jaded man, trapped in his office and his daily routine transforms everyday gestures and repetitive tasks into a physical and visual language of humor and absurdity.
The evening of September 25 will conclude with a concert by Sofia hardcore punk band Against All Authority.
On September 26, magician Dani Belev and Alexandra will present a family-friendly magic show. The musical programme will continue with a concert by Dario Bulgario, who combines electronic and acoustic music with elements of folk, pop, funk, jazz, and classical music.
On September 27, the festival will conclude with Lumo – a circus dream between two infinities, the new production by Infinity Artist Club, featuring aerial acrobatics, dance, aerial silks, and light.
Among this year’s special events, on September 26, is The Bedtime Story “The Best Thing” by Angel Karaliychev, a school project created by second- and third-grade students from Roerich Private School, with their primary school teachers Gergana Nikolova and Nina Stamatova. Through performance, the children turn the study of literature, music, and various school subjects into a theatrical experience inspired by interdisciplinary learning, suggestopedia, and social circus.
Social circus in “Maria’s World,” taking place on September 26, is a performance by the festival’s long-standing partners and collaborators from the Maria’s World Foundation. The stage will feature juggling, Chinese plates, tightrope walking, and wonderful performers from the foundation’s team, led by social circus instructor Geo Kalev.
On September 25, the Circus Debate will bring together Bulgarian and international professionals from the fields of circus, culture, and social work. The focus will be on the development of social circus and opportunities to integrate circus practices into urban environments through the Circus Playground concept—accessible outdoor spaces where people of different ages and abilities can practice circus disciplines.
Clown Titania Chaos will once again lead young and adult fans of clowning on a colorful journey through the worlds of humor, physical comedy, and play. Through improvisation, mime, and accessible exercises, participants will explore imagination, movement, and the joy of being themselves on September 26 and 27.
Artist Daniel Molina (Chile/Bulgaria) will present the juggling performance Metanoia on September 27.
