The Commission for Consumer Protection (CCP) is launching inspections at retail chains on Friday to establish the actual prices being charged and the commercial practices being used, the Commission said.
Inspectors will collect data and prepare an analysis of relevant wholesale prices, comparing current retail prices with those recorded on specified earlier dates.
The Commission said it is regularly receiving consumer complaints about increases in the prices of basic food products. It is currently handling some 12,000 complaints across various sectors, concerning both goods and services.
The inspections will initially focus on groups of food products, starting with dairy products, fruit, vegetables and other items most frequently cited in consumer complaints.
The aim is to establish the fact behind price movements and protect consumers from misleading commercial practices and unjustified price increases.
Where a retail price increase is identified, the Commission will assess whether it is economically justified and will take action provided for by law if violations are found.
The results of inspections already carried out at fuel stations, covering 200 sites nationwide, are also expected within the next few days.
Next week, inspections will expand to other economic sectors where consumers have reported persistent price increases, including services, the CCP said.
On September 29, CCP Chair Maya Manolova announced that inspections would also be launched into the actual purchase prices paid to Bulgarian producers for their output. “The inspections will reveal the truth about the actual prices and the prices at which Bulgarian produce and domestically produced goods are being purchased, and this information will be made public,” Manolova said.
