Bulgarian artist Dimitar Genchev’s exhibition Layers opens on Wednesday at the Cube Gallery at Toplocentrala in Sofia, the organizers said.
The exhibition brings together works dating from 2008-2009 to the present, including new pieces, previously overlooked paintings and earlier works that Genchev has revisited.
“Layer by layer, fragments, remnants, colours, figures and landscapes are revealed, much like an old album in which images overlap,” Cube Gallery curator Vladiya Mihaylova said. Some images fade, others emerge, while still others remain as barely perceptible traces of the past, she added.
Genchev builds his paintings by gradually adding and removing layers of paint. He introduces images and colours before erasing or peeling away parts of the surface, allowing intention and chance to interact in the finished work.
A conversation with Genchev about his approach to time, memory and the painted surface will take place at the gallery on October 14.
Born in 1985, Genchev lives and works in Plovdiv. He studied at the National Academy of Art in Sofia, the Utrecht School of the Arts and the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. His solo exhibitions include Beauty & Decay at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sittard, the Netherlands, together with Peter Buggenhout; Sepia at Sarieva Gallery; The Good Machines at Credo Bonum Gallery; and Watch Over Me at Rutger Brandt Gallery in Amsterdam.
His work has also been presented at international art fairs including Art Rotterdam, Liste Art Fair Basel and Vienna Contemporary. Genchev is a recipient of the Buning Brongers Prize in the Netherlands and has received grants from the Mondriaan Fund.
