An exhibition of 100 posters created for shows at Tokyo’s ginza graphic gallery will open at Sofia’s National Palace of Culture on Thursday, the organizers said Monday.
The exhibition, Japanese Graphic Design – ginza graphic gallery: Posters from Exhibitions 1986-2025, will run from October 1 to 20 in the Marble Foyer. It opens at on October 1 and is part of the 37th Days of Japanese Culture in Bulgaria, the Salon of the Arts and Sofia Paper Art Fest 2026.
A collection of 409 original posters and 133 books related to Japanese graphic design and the gallery’s exhibitions is coming to Bulgaria. It forms part of the cultural heritage preserved and promoted by DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, which is launching a long-term programme to present the collection in Bulgaria with the Amateras Foundation.
The programme begins with 100 posters selected by DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion. They were created for notable exhibitions held at ginza graphic gallery between its founding in 1986 and 2025.
Featuring designers from different generations and working in different styles, the exhibition traces nearly four decades of Japanese graphic design. It presents the poster as a means of visual communication, a work of art and a record of its time, reflecting changes in aesthetics, typography, technology and visual thinking.
The DNP Graphic Design Archive was established in 2000 to preserve and present the creative legacy of contemporary graphic design. As of 2026, it holds approximately 25,000 works by 247 designers from Japan and other countries, with a particular focus on posters.
The collection’s arrival in Bulgaria will make it possible to develop curatorial projects in the coming years devoted to individual designers and generations, historical periods, themes, styles and typographic approaches in Japanese graphic design. Japan’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Chikahisa Sumi will open the exhibition. DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion representatives Sachio Ito and Yusuke Matsuura will travel to Sofia for the event, the organizers added.
The exhibition is organized by the Embassy of Japan in Bulgaria, the National Palace of Culture’s Salon of the Arts and the Amateras Foundation, in partnership with DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion. It is supported by the Ministry of Culture through its Visual Arts programme, Sofia Municipality, Nihon Tomono Kai and other partners. Admission is free.
