The National Network for Children (NNC) has launched a travelling exhibition tracing more than 150 years of civic initiatives for children in Bulgaria, with the exhibition due to visit 24 cities across the country in the coming weeks, the organization said.
The exhibition, titled 150 Years of Children’s Organizations in Bulgaria – History, Lessons and Future, opened in Sofia and consists of 21 panels presenting people, organizations and civic initiatives that have worked for children’s rights and wellbeing over the years. Its next stop will be Vratsa, Northwestern Bulgaria.
The tour will also present the Encyclopedia of Children’s Organizations in Bulgaria: Chronicles of a Child Rights Activist, written by NNC Executive Director Georgi Bogdanov to mark the Network’s 20th anniversary.
The 580-page publication covers more than 150 years of civic initiatives and includes more than 600 organizations, initiatives, individuals and activists who, according to NNC, have contributed to the development of policies concerning children and the protection of children’s rights.
At the exhibition’s presentation in Sofia, Bogdanov also discussed the development of policies concerning children over recent decades. He divided their recent history into three periods: what he described as policy stagnation between 1991 and 2001, a subsequent period of rapid growth and reform, and the present period, which he characterized as one of “steps backwards for Bulgaria’s children”.
Bogdanov argued that civil society organizations had played an important role in legislative reforms, the creation of new services and partnerships concerning children.
The meetings accompanying the exhibition will also present findings from NNC’s latest Report Card monitoring report, covering the past 15 years. The report gives the State an overall score of 3.28 for its care for children, including 2.96 for children’s wellbeing and 3.21 for children’s healthcare.
According to NNC, Bulgaria’s child population decreased by nearly 80,000 between 2011 and 2025, while challenges remain in children’s healthcare, education, protection from violence, social inclusion and children’s participation in decisions affecting them.
Bogdanov said organizations within the Network have accumulated substantial knowledge and expertise but argued that consistent policies, coordination and sustainable funding are needed to translate that experience into lasting results.
By the end of September, the exhibition is also due to visit Vratsa and Kyustendil. Stops scheduled for October include Lovech, Gabrovo, Pleven, Vidin, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Burgas and Dimitrovgrad, followed in November by Shumen, Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Targovishte, Varna, Dobrich, Silistra, Razgrad and Blagoevgrad.
