The low level of the Danube River does not affect the safety of Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRA) Chair Tsanko Bachiyski told reporters on Friday. He said that the situation was unprecedented, but the low river level poses a threat only to electricity production and does not compromise safety in any way.
A Procedure for Actions in the Event of an Emergency Low Level of the Danube River has been developed for situations when the river level falls. The main actions under the procedure are based on the river level, with the first one being taken when the level reaches 21.50 m according to the Baltic System. At that point, the level begins to be monitored daily and the pump grilles are cleaned if necessary. At 21 m, maximum stocks of water and solutions needed for shutting down the units are accumulated, along with several other measures. At 20.50 m, the units begin to be unloaded until a balance is achieved between the water supplied by the shore pumping station and the units’ consumption. Only Unit 5 has been unloaded.
The unloading of the units begins at a level of 20.30 m, down to the level of power needed for their own operations, while at 19.70 m the shore pumps are switched off, with the exception of one, and the use of Danube water by consumers is restricted as much as possible.
The water level currently stands at 20.64 m, but due to the lack of rainfall in Europe, Unit 5 remains unloaded, NRA Deputy Chair Elizabeth Tsvetanova also said.
According to the NRA management, climate change makes it necessary to consider long-term measures.
