Balgarianovinite.com The Border Police General Directorate marked its professional holiday on Monday. On December 22, 1887, the first Border Guard Act was published in the State Gazette.
During celebrations, the head of the Bulgarian Border Police, Chief Commissioner Anton Zlatanov, told reporters that a 70% decrease in migrant pressure, a huge increase in the number of uncovered crimes related to smuggling, and a record number of busted criminal groups involved in migrant trafficking.
The celebrations were also attended by outgoing Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov and outgoing Interior Minister Daniel Mitov.
Regarding the adoption of a law extending the 2025 budget, Zlatanov said that this issue should be discussed by politicians, but in his opinion, all employees should receive decent remuneration. “However, we have the drive and motivation to work under any conditions, and when there is a problem, we are the first to try to solve it and the first to make sacrifices,” Zlatanov added.
He assured that they are currently in constant communication with their Greek counterparts regarding the border blockades by protesting Greek farmers. Tourists will have no problems crossing during the holidays, he underscored.
“We are celebrating the first year since Bulgaria joined the Schengen area by land. This has ensured economic prosperity for our country, and while other people are resting, you are out there guarding the borders,” Zlatanov said in his address to border police officers.
Mitov told the Border Police employees: “We can be proud of what we have achieved since our accession to Schengen, including a dramatic reduction in migration pressure on our borders. There is no country that does not appreciate your efforts and the fact that you are guarding the external borders of this common entity. The results are clear – more than a 70% reduction in pressure, new employees and equipment.”
Outgoing Prime Minister Zhelyazkov congratulated the Border Police employees on their professional holiday.
During the ceremony, wreaths and flowers were laid at the Monument to the Police Officers Who Died in the Line of Duty. Border Police officers were honored for their professional achievements over the past year.
Border Police Day has been marked on December 22 since 1992 by order of the Minister of Interior.
