The National Gallery will present an exhibition of more than 60 works by Bulgarian artist Christo Simeonov (1935-2020) at its Kvadrat 500 venue in Sofia from October 28 to December 31, 2026. Titled “Between Matter and Antimatter”, the exhibition will open on Wednesday and will trace the artist’s creative development over five decades, from still lifes, interiors, portraits and landscapes to his artistic concept 1of Pariorealism.
Simeonov belonged to a generation of artists whose work developed alongside changes in visual language in the second half of the 20th century. His distinctive approach drew on long-standing interests in physics, astrology and cosmology, bringing painting into dialogue with philosophy, science and imagination, the National Gallery said.
In his earlier works, Simeonov used precise depictions of objects, light and space to explore the relationship between people and their surroundings. His landscapes, created throughout his career, drew inspiration from both nature and the urban environment.
In the late 1970s, seeking a new artistic direction, he developed Pariorealism. Using an airbrush and unconventional spatial compositions, he explored ideas of rhythm, matter and the Universe to create images that went beyond the established laws of physical reality.
Simeonov’s place in Bulgarian art is closely associated with science-fiction artists such as Stefan Lefterov, Vasil Ivanov, Tekla Aleksieva and Dimitar Yankov.
BTA, Bulgarian National Television, ELLE magazine and rozali.com are media partners.
